CapeTownMagazine.com launches online music JukeBox
CapeTownMagazine.com has just launched South Africa’s first online music JukeBox, loaded with albums featuring some of the country’s most renowned artists.
“South Africans really know how to make music, and we want to help to get that music heard by as many people as possible. We want to make the world sit up and take note of the wonderful musical talent this country is home to,” says the publication’s managing director, Marc Zandhuis.
The JukeBox has been launched with eight of the most popular CDs from renowned record company African Cream Music. Each features one or more of South Africa’s most renowned music makers, such as the legendary Pops Mohamed. African groove, lounge and ambient albums as well as traditional African drumming and gospel music. This is just some of what you can expect to hear on the JukeBox, which boasts a colourful and intuitive interface with a distinct South African character.
Also on offer are iconic albums such as The Essential South African Trip and Winds of Change, both of which both feature famous speech excerpts from the likes of Nelson Mandela and include many rousing examples of the influential music that formed and still forms the backbone of South African heritage.
Essentially the vision behind the JukeBox is to give anyone the opportunity to conveniently listen to some of South Africa’s finest and most significant music before committing to buying it. Users can listen to tracks while continuing to read up about the album or browsing the other content on CapeTownMagazine.com.
“Many of our friends, from overseas and Cape Town love it when we play South African music for them, because they enjoy discovering new artists and bands. Our JukeBox aims to showcase a wide array of South African music, from contemporary to traditional, from jazz to house, from lounge to kwela as well as music from the (anti-)apartheid era,” Zandhuis explains.
Through the music featured in their JukeBox, CapeTownMagazine.com, which sees thousands of visitors per day, hopes to offer South Africans a no-fuss opportunity to hear their country’s best music, and foreigners a unique chance to connect with South African culture.
“We aim to expose a diversity of South African music to South Africans and particularly to people from other countries. Discovering new music should be simple and straightforward, and that’s exactly what our JukeBox is - a quick and easy way of sampling the many eclectic flavours of Mzansi music that really deserve to be heard, and then you know what to get in the shops as well,” says Zandhuis.
The collection of featured music is set to grow steadily as more record labels and artists seize the opportunity to expose their music on a busy international platform. “We are building up a vast collection of contemporary and legendary South African music that we will be showcasing in the coming months - we’re aiming for 50 new albums by mid-2009. Keep your ears open!” says Zandhuis.
