Counting Crows and live acts

I was surprised to hear from a couple of people that The Counting Crows show didn’t really live up to expectations. I didn’t attend the concert but I would be interested to get feedback from people who were there.

What were the problems?

Are they simply not such a great live act?

Let us know.

On the subject of live bands - any particular bands that you would love to see in South Africa? For me it has to be Linkin Park and Green Day

  1. Hey Marc, I attended the concert at the Dome on Friday night….I’m not a die-hard CC fan but have always enjoyed their music. Not sure what the story was but Adam Duritz seemed a bit bombed, not sure on what, but he fell over a few times, that could have been part of his vibe (he’s very intense and into his songs.)

He reworked old classic CC hits so that many didn’t recognise them which was also sad (I appreciate the art behind that and perhaps the reasons but many people still go to live shows to hear their faves.)

That being said despite the mumbling for the first hour the last 20 minutes were great and he gave an awesome speech about SA and our bright future. It’s a difficult thing - bands grow and age and their style changes - perhaps too many concert goers expect them to stay the same.

  2. Hi Melissa

Thanks for the feedback. Yip bands and tunes change.

It is always difficult for an international group to come out here and meet “expectations”. For a lot of people they know one or 2 songs and they expect the same vibe throughout the show.

I think its pretty frustrating for people though when they expect one thing and get something else though.

    Thanks again

  3. Hi Marc,

I must say I’m a massive CC fans… I own all their CDs and behind Smashing Pumpkins, they are my favourite band. I was really amped but bought my tickets a bit late so wasn’t able to get Golden Circle.

The sound was awful from where I was (front of standing area) and the people around me were bored and started talking. The problems were as follows:
    1) Strange set (he opened with Black & Blue) and sand quite a few arb songs (which is cool for me but not so cool for most others… he did not even sing his latest single)
    2) He seemed stoned
    3) He rambled his words, not really singing them
    4) Normally I enjoy his artistic additions (as Melissa stated) and combining of songs but this time they were random and not well done.
    5) The concert was short… 1 hour 10min and 2 encore songs
    6) Interestingly I just saw the set list… he was meant to sing 4 encore songs. the band started with what I thought was Hanging Around but Adam started singing Big Yellow Taxi. They were both on the encore list

When I left the concert last time they were here, it was the best concert I had and have ever been to. This time round it seemed like they didn’t really care.

    Regards.

  4. Hhhmmmm not good!

People pay a lot of money for these tickets - if they’re going to get let down then it leaves a bad taste for the next event.

After the Celine Dion nonsense this is going to leave people very sceptical
