Has “The Fugitive” bombed?

I have been following The Fugitive competition on 94.7 Highveld Stereo and it occurred to me that the competition hasn’t really been a success this year.

A week or so ago I was saying how the competition is probably one of the most gripping and exciting competitions on South African radio at the moment. But judging from peoples participation this year maybe I need to revise that comment.

This morning Jeremy Mansfield literally had to decipher all the clues and direct people to the Home Affairs Department in Randburg before people piled out and went to find him. In the early rounds of the competition when the tickets to London were up for grabs, The Fugitive literally had to say “Come to London Pie Co in Woodmead and Village Walk (?) to get the tickets”….

The trip to London had the capacity to be a gripping addition or simply a step too far that put it out of the reach of ordinary South Africans. I think the competition organisers also made a mistake by not allowing people to jump on a plane and stay in the race. I know I had a ticket reserved and ready to go but when the organisers said we couldn’t use our own tickets we turned pretty negative toward the competition. Our feeling was that the game was to find The Fugitive – if somebody has the balls to pay R8k for a ticket to win R50k and jump on a plane to London with less than 24 hours notice then surely they should have remained in the competition.

What do our readers think? Has The Fugitive lost its appeal?
