Review – Chess the Musical

I would hardly call myself a cultural butterfly but I would like to think that if I went to watch a decent theatre production I would be able to enjoy myself.

I went to watch “Chess – The Musical” at the Pieter Toerien theatre at Montecasino and put bluntly – the only thing that kept me awake till the interval was the horrific sound quality which kept jolting me into a state of panic.

The original Chess “Story” was a brilliant cultural and social event highlighting the East vs. West conflict at the time. At that moment in time the social aspects were being played out over a chess board. High tension, great story … but butchered in this presentation.

My complaints would be

- The sound quality was poor
- The one guys voice sounded horribly synthesized to make him sound American – which was funny because the other guy didn’t have a Russian accent
- The songs – nobody could work out what they are or were
- There was no drama or story telling. It was just one song moving to the next interspersed with some male ballet dancer prancing across the stage on tip-toe with a chair above his head….

I was thoroughly disappointed. I think the story could have been told a hell of a lot better and musical wasn’t the way to go. If you haven’t bought tickets yet – save your money for the next petrol price increase instead. If you have – well we all have to be disappointed at some stage in our lives.
