Airtime for SA music
I was driving today flicking between Jacaranda, Highveld and 5FM and it struck me that there is a hell of a lot of airtime for SA music these days. Even more rewarding is the quality of the music being played.
The Parlotones, Red Angel, Skwatta Kamp, Wonderboom etc. They are all getting great exposure and airtime and new bands are constantly coming along with chances to show what they have to offer.
The radio stations also seem to be completely committed to punting local music and if one looks at how Highveld are sponsoring their Afrikaans music festival again in conjunction with Rapport, you see this part of the industry gaining continuous exposure.
For an industry that is still as small and undefined as the South African music one, any and all exposure is vital. We spend a lot of time and money bringing big name international stars to SA but then we forget about our local talent. This is an area where I believe the local radio stations have done really well.
Keep it up SA Radio.

Is it not so that all radio stations have a quota system in place for local music when applying for a broadcasting licence? i remember years back when I worked at radio Tuks/TUKS FM this used to be the case. That would maybe also be thie case why there is so much local content on the air.
I suspect it is but I think my point was more about the fact that it is not the same old names and faces being played.
There is a larger pool for them to pull from, the talent is there and these guys are doing it on merit.
Point taken! I do enjoy your blog though!
Thanks! Its been a lot of fun running with it. Just gotta build the community a bit now
