Radio Review - Interview with Robbie Kruse
When we launched this blog we asked the question - where is the fresh radio presenter talent. Our community responded by identifying Robbie Kruse of TuksFM as one the most promising young presenters on SA radio at the moment. We caught up with Robbie to find out a bit more about him and the varsity radio scene:
Age: 21
Qualifications / studying: Studying through the university of Pretoria, and I am currently 3rd year.
How long have you been presenting on radio? For 2 years now
Tell us a bit about the nature of your show and when and where people can catch you?
Well I do the Drive show in the afternoons, so I am the guy that must get you home with a smile, my shows are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3pm through till 6pm. I am not scared to voice my opinion about things, although I don’t intentionally try and hurt people’s feelings, I feel that some on-air personalities are too scared to challenge the very things that influence their daily lives! If it gets on your nerves or it frustrates you, well you have a microphone, let people know! Same as when you’re happy, bring it to life!
What makes Tuks FM a great station to work for? The diversity of all the different people that work here, we have every flavor of human at this place, and in life that is the most important thing, you have to know as much as possible about every culture that you come across! And the amount of awesome friends I have made whilst working here is huge. I am very goal orientated in life and don’t want to mess around with my career, I also appreciate the hard work that the managers and other staff at Tuksfm put into this successful business.
The Varsity and Campus Radio scene has a surprisingly loyal following beyond just the guys that attend varsity – to what do you attribute this? We strive to be a world-class station, and I think we are achieving this in the sense that we prepare all our employees for their futures, whether it is in the marketing, news reading or production fields, the end product that eventually goes out on air has been perfected to high degree, as DJ’s we are there to execute it as best we can. I am honoured to be an on-air personality at Tuksfm, and I know there are many people who wanted, and still do want my job. So I think we sound great, because I and people like me work extremely hard at what we love doing.
If you weren’t a radio presenter what would you want to do / be? I would love to also be able to direct movies, and in the same breath, because I love TV and entertainment so much, I would love to be a TV show producer. Although radio is really an awesome medium of entertainment, and working off air is also always a possibility?
You’ve been highlighted by our community as one of the most promising young presenters on radio – what do you think you do well that other people can learn from? First of all thank you. Well I do owe a lot to the people that have helped me to form what I am today. If I were to give advice to those that want to learn in the field I would say the following, you are never as good as you think! Don’t act like it, and when somebody gives you advice, don’t shoot it down, work with it, take in as much information as you can. Listen to your own material after you have done a show, so that you know exactly what not to do the next time you have the honour of being on air. And one of the most important things that you have to know is that one must read everything you see, whether it is a billboard, or a prize winning novel? Read it, be up-to-date with news. Be comfortable with yourself and your environment.
How much of radio work is hard graft and how much of it is fun? It is all hard graft, and on the same note, it is the most fun I have ever had. The harder you work, the more fun you will have! Trust me there is someone that will one day be better than you, so to have all the fun in the world, work as hard as you can, although remember do everything in moderation! I work hard and play even harder!
Most embarrassing moment on radio to date? Not being able to talk properly when we had exotic dancers in the studio. It was quite a funny story though, I mixed everything up, and forgot to do my news, my traffic went out at the wrong time, although it was extremely embarrassing to me, I think it sounded pretty funny on radio.
Thanks for Robbie for taking the time to respond to our audience! It’s much appreciated.
